Cases of using Present Simple Tense
This tense is used for actions that occur continuously or repeatedly in the present tense. The action will be the same yesterday, today and tomorrow and will not change.
- I go to work by bus every day.
- She always gets up at 6 o’clock.
- Many people think that if a black cat crosses your way, it is bad luck.
There are always real events in the world. For example, natural sunrise, the rotation of the earth around the sun, the flight of birds to tropical countries in autumn, and so on. In addition, the present tense verb is used to express a general idea of the general rules, professions, people, and other events in society.
- The sun rises in the east.
- Cats live on mice.
- Water boils at 100ᵒC.
- Carpenters make things of wood.
- When ladies enter the room, gentlemen stand up and greet them.
There are several verbs in English that are used to agree, to promise, to recommend. Such verbs are called "performative verbs" and are widely used in speech. Examples are the verbs "to agree / think / suggest / recommend / insist / promise / apologize / refuse". These verbs are used in the present tense.
- I promise I won’t be late.
- What do you suggest I do?
- He insists that we should come with him.
The present simple tense verb is used in the following tenses:
Always, Usually, Often, Sometimes, Rarely, Never, Hardly Ever, Frequently, Occasionally, Seldom, All the Time, Generally, etc.
every+day, morning, night, monday, week, month, other day/year.
- Jim always gets up at 6 o’clock.
- He never lies to his parents.
- We frequently see that man on the beach.
- In English, “Why don’t you…?” The compound is used to recommend, to advise.
- Why don’t you get a new job instead of lying all day?
Auxiliary verbs 'don't / doesn't' are never used when the never tense form is used.
- He never lies to his parents. (She never lies to her parents. (The right device)
- He doesn’t never lie to his parents. (Wrong speech device)
The same is true for negative words such as 'no / nobody / no-one / nothing / nowhere / neither / seldom / rarely / hardly ever'.
- Nobody believes a liar when he tells the truth. (Nobody doesn’t believe - Emas).
