Uses of A/An/The - Common Errors
Use of “A/An”
A/An is used before a singular countable noun (i.e., common noun and collective noun) if that noun refers to an uncertain person, animal or thing.
· For example- She is a nurse.
If there is an adjective or adjective + adverb before the noun, then A/An will be used according to the word that comes closest to it.
· Like- He is an intelligent boy.
The use of A/An depends on the pronunciation of the word before which they are used and not on the spelling of that word. If it starts with a vowel sound then An is used.
If the word starts with a (consonant sound), then A is used.
Vowel sound a, aa, e, e, a:
· He is an honest man.
Consonant sound a, b, c, d, g:
· He is a one-eyed man.
A/An is used before singular countable noun to denote the whole caste.
· Like – A child needs love.
Generally, A/An is not used before a Proper Noun, but when A/An is used before a Proper Noun, then there is a sense of the quality contained in that scene or person, not a place or person.
· Like- He is a Hitler.
“The” use of
When a singular countable noun occurs for the first time in a speech, it is preceded by A/An, but when the same noun is repeated, it is preceded by “The”.
· Like- I saw a girl. The girl was beautiful.
If a Noun+Preposition+Noun is used in the sentence, then “The” will be used before the first noun.
· Like- The gold of India is famous.
"The" is used before the names of the range of mountains.
· Like- The Himalayas, The Vindhyas, The Alps
Peak or hills are in singular form; "The" is not used before their name.
· Like- Mount Everest, Mount Abu, Snow-Don
"The" is used before the names of the group of islands.
· E.g., The West Indies, The Andaman, The East Indies
The islands which are in singular form do not have "the" before their names.
· E.g., Sumatra, Java, Sicily
"The" is used before the names of river, ocean, bay, desert, forest, etc.
· E.g., The Ganges, The Indian Ocean, The Bay of Bengal, The Sahara
"The" is used before the name of big texts.
· E.g., The Gita, The Bible
"The" is used before the name of the heavenly bodies] directions or the object which is the only one in the world.
· E.g., The earth, The east, The air, The equator
(But "The" is not used with the words Heaven, Hell, God and Parliament etc.)
"The" is used before the name of newspapers.
· Like- The Hindustan Times, The Statesman
“The” is used before the name of the historical buildings.
· E.g., The Red Fort, The Kaba, The French Revolution
"The" is used before the names of musical instruments.
· Like- I can play the piano.
But when musical instruments are used as countable nouns, A/An is used before them.
· Like- He has bought a harmonium.
"The" is used before the date of the month.
· Like- The 5th January, The 2nd of August
"The" comes before the names of religious community and political parties.
· E.g., The Hindus, The Muslims, The BJP
"The" must be put before the name of airplanes] ships and trains
· For example, The Meghdoot, The Vikrant, The Virat
Article is not used before the names of countries but "The" must be put before the names of some countries.
· E.g., The U.S.A., The Netherlands, The Sudan
The names of government departments and armed forces are preceded by “The”
· For example, The Legislative, The Judiciary, The Navy
"The" is used before the superlative degree
· Like- He is the tallest boy in my village.
When ordinal numbers are written in letters, "The" is used
· E.g., The first, The third, The ninth
(But with Roman numbers neither the is used nor st or nd is used with them)
When a person is to be indicated by his position, "The" is used before him.
· E.g., The Director, The Home Minister, The President
If there is a sense of election or contrast from the comparative degree, then before that "the" is used.
· As-She is the taller of the two.
Omission of Articles
“Articles” are not used here
The article does not appear before the name of the languages.
· Like- She can't speak Tamil. Not that She can't speak the Tamil.
Article does not appear before the name of the subjects.
· Like- I have no interest in physics. Not that I have no interest in the Physics.
There is no article before the names of festivals and seasons.
· Like- I celebrated Diwali with my family. But I went to Delhi in the Christmas holiday.
The name of the day and month is not preceded by article.
· Like- He will come on Sunday. Not He will come on the Sunday.
The article does not appear before the name of diseases.
· Like- He is suffering from small-pox. Not He is suffering from small-pox. But The plague is used before some diseases, such as: The plague, The measles, The mumps, The gout.
Article is not used before the names of sports
· Like- I play badminton. Not that I play the badminton.
The article is not preceded by the names of food ingredients and food.
· For example- I like bread and butter. Not I like the bread and butter.
Article does not appear before specific name of person, village, city, district, state, country, continent
· Like-Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan. Not that Jaipur is the capital of the Rajasthan.
If Man, Woman, Life, Death, Art, Science is used in a broader sense, then the first article is not used.
· For example- Man is Mortal., not the man is Mortal.
If the use of School, Church, College, Hospital, Prison, Court, Bed is for the original purpose, then the article does not appear before them.
· E.g., The injured boy was sent to hospital. not The injured boy was send to the hospital.
