What is "Sponge City" and how will it work in India?

Chennai is ready to adopt innovative water management strategies to prevent urban floods and turn it into a sponge city.

The Sponge City concept seeks to make urban areas more permeable, providing more open space for rainwater harvesting as well as access to water.

The Water Resources Department in Chennai is exploring the possibility of digging recharge shafts in small reservoirs across the city.

This recharge shaft can be dug to a depth of 80-90 feet. This will help refill the water level.

According to the plan, small reservoirs and temple tanks can be used to store excess water during heavy rains.

What is Sponge City?

Sponge City is a new urban construction model for flood management and strengthening ecological infrastructure and drainage systems. The concept was proposed by Chinese researchers in 2000. The concept was adopted in 2014 by the Chinese Communist Party and the State Council as "urbanization policy". This system helps reduce the impact of urban flooding, urban heat island and depletion of water resources. It improves the ecological environment and biodiversity by absorbing and capturing rainwater and using it to reduce flooding. Sponge City's policy is nature-based solutions, which use natural landscapes for water storage, storage and cleaning.
