As India looks to put on a stellar performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Indian football icon Bhaichung Bhutia, Olympic long jump medalist Anju Bobby George and former Indian hockey team captains Viren Rasquinha and Sardar Singh are among the former athletes who have been awarded the mission. Announcing the complete list of non-official members for the MoC, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur said, "We are strengthening India's preparedness for the Paris Olympics 2024. 7 more Top It is a pleasure to announce and welcome international athletes. The Sports Minister tweeted, "The preparations for the 2024 Olympics are underway and our sportspersons will benefit immensely from the rich experience of former athletes at MoC."

 

Other members in the MoC are rifle shooting legend Anjali Bhagwat, table tennis star Monalisa Mehta and ace shuttler Trupti Murgande.

 

In addition, Dr. Malav Shroff, an Olympian sailor and sports science expert, will remain at the MoC. Other former players in the MoC are Athletics Federation of India President Adile Sumeriwala, Athletic Federation of India President and TOPS CEO Commodore Pushpendra Garg.

 

In addition, Arjun Munda, cabinet ministers, Ajay Singh and Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh being the presidents of Archery Association of India, Boxing Federation of India and Wrestling Federation of India will be part of the Olympic cell.

 

What does MOC do?

 

The Mission Olympic Cell (MOC), part of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), seeks athletes for financial assistance under the prestigious Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). It also focuses on the selection, exclusion and retention of Athletes, Coaches, Training Institutes receiving SAIL TOPS assisted.

 

According to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the number of former athletes as core members of the revised MoC has been doubled, to make it more athlete-centric than ever before.

 

"The MoC advances India's Olympic readiness through the Ministry's Target Olympic Podium (TOPS) initiative. This has been done to accelerate India's progress on the global sports platform," an official statement said.

 

Understanding the Goal Olympic Podium Plan (TOPS)

 

Target Olympic Podium Scheme is a flagship program of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports which is an effort to provide support to India's top athletes. The scheme seeks to add a premium to the preparedness of these athletes so that they can win medals in the Olympics, Paralympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and other major events.

 

The scheme currently supports 104 TOPS Core Group athletes and Indian men's and women's hockey teams in 13 sports disciplines and 269 TOPS Development Group athletes across 12 sports disciplines, who will be considered for future mega-events such as the 2024 Paris Games and 2028 Los Angeles Games. is being supported for.

 

How has TOPS affected Indian Olympic and Paralympic performance?

 

In order to elevate performance in the Olympics and Paralympics, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports launched the  Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) in September 2014. And from there, the results were immediate. TOPS sponsored athletes achieved relative success at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

 

PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik won silver and bronze medals in badminton and wrestling at the 2016 Rio Olympics. And, at the 2016 Paralympic Games, TOPS athletes won 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze, demonstrating the effectiveness of the plan. In the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, 70 athletes won medals and 47 of them were supported under the TOP scheme.
