99% POCSO cases in courts pending trial in 2020: Praja Foundation Report

 

The Praja Foundation published its report on POSCO matters on November 25, 2021.

 A total of 16,667 cases of crimes against children (CAC) were before courts last year of which 99% are pending trial, as per data till December 2020. ... However, more than 77% of POCSO cases at Delhi courts take 1-3 years to complete trial while over 16% of cases take up to 5 years for a judgment, data shows.

Key Findings of the Report

 

Despite a reduction in crimes against children, 99 percent of cases under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offenses (POCSO) are pending by December 2020, the report said.

In 2020, 94% of the total 1,197 cases were girls. Of these, 721 were rape cases and 376 were sexual assault cases.

Of the total rape cases, 42% were against children under 18 in 2020, compared to 47% in 2018 and 45% in 2019.

The highest number of rape victims (620 out of 721 in 2020) was in the age group of 12 to 18 years.

In 95% of the total rape cases, the perpetrators identified the victims.

93% of the 67 cases against boys under the POCSO Act were unnatural offenses.

 

IPC cases

 

According to the report, chargesheets were filed in only 28% of the total IPC cases investigated in 2020. It found that 58% of crimes against women and 56% of crimes against children were not investigated. He further notes that there was a 20% shortage of police sub-inspectors, resulting in fewer investigations. As of December 2020, 99 percent of crimes against children were pending.
