More than just food and petrol are being affected by inflation.

Records examined by The Times show that UCLA's football coaches would earn a record $10,172,500 in salary and bonuses this year, a 3.2 percent increase from the previous year.

Coach Chip Kelly's $5.6 million salary, which includes a $1 million retention bonus due on December 15, accounts for more than half of the new total.

Bill McGovern, the new defensive coordinator, is Kelly's highest-paid coach, earning $900,000 over the course of his two-year contract.

For the first time, the total compensation for UCLA's football coaches crossed eight figures.

Tim Drevno, the offensive line coach, will earn $560,000 this year, followed by assistant head coach, defensive backs coach, and coordinator of the defensive passing game Brian Norwood ($535,000); inside linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr. ($437,500); quarterbacks coach Ryan Gunderson ($410,000); outside linebackers and special teams coach Ryan Gunderson ($410,000).

For the second years of their contracts, raises and bonuses will bring the total compensation for the coaching staff to $10,357,500. Each assistant might receive yearly performance bonuses totaling an additional $100,000.

All of the assistants have two-year contracts with UCLA that, should UCLA terminate them without cause, require them to receive their full base pay and talent fees. If the coaches leave before the conclusion of their contracts, they would owe the institution a variety of sums.

Unless McGovern accepted a position as a collegiate head coach, an NFL head coach, a coordinator, or a position coach, the balance would be paid to UCLA if McGovern left before December 31, 2023.

If the other assistants left before the conclusion of their contracts, they would only be required to pay UCLA $50,000; however, there are other conditions under which this cost may be waived.

In contrast, Neuheisel's waiver is only granted if he departs for a position as a college coordinator in the Football Bowl Subdivision or as a head coach at the college level. For instance, Norton wouldn't be required to pay that sum if he left for a position as a college head coach, an NFL head coach, coordinator, or position coach.

Kelly's previously reported buyout stipulates that, should UCLA fire him without cause by December 15, 2023, he will still be entitled to receive 70% of his outstanding pay, talent fee, and retention bonuses.
On December 16, 2023, his buyout will be zero.

The assistant bonus system is the same as in previous years.

A Pac-12 championship game appearance is worth $15,000; a bowl game appearance is worth $10,000; a New Year's Six bowl game appearance is worth $20,000; a College Football Playoff semifinal appearance is worth $10,000; a College Football Playoff championship appearance is worth $20,000; and a national championship appearance is worth $25,000;

The helpers may additionally receive participation pay of up to $10,000.
