Approval was given by the Union Cabinet to increase the age of marriage of a woman from 18 to 21 years.
In December 2020, a task force headed by Jaya Jaitley was formed by the Policy Commission to increase the age of marriage for women.
To make the age of marriage of women compulsory at 21 years, the government will amend the Prevention of Child Marriage Act, 2006, the Special Marriage Act and the Hindu Marriage Act, 1995.
Marriages that take place 21 years after the implementation of this law will be considered invalid as well as a legal offense.
Potential benefits
1) According to the National Family Health Survey-3, increasing the age of marriage for women will reduce maternal mortality.
2) Std. 12 After marriage, girls will be forced to drop out of school.
3) The age of marriage for both men and women should be 21 years to ensure the right to equality under Article 14 to 18 of the Constitution.
4) Women's independence will increase. The objectives of women empowerment can be proved.
5) Women's participation in the workforce will increase and their social, economic and political rights will be facilitated.
