Barbados: The Newest Republic in the World 2021

 

Most recently, Barbados officially removed Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, making the country the world's newest republic almost 400 years after it became a British colony.

The Caribbean Island nation seceded from Britain 55 years after its independence from the effects of colonial rule.

However, Barbados will remain one of the 54 Commonwealth countries.

Location: It is a small island country in the southeastern Caribbean Sea.

Neighboring Countries: Its neighbors include St. Lucia in the north, St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the west, and Trinidad and Tobago in the south.

Capital: Bridgetown

Independence: Barbados gained independence on November 30, 1966.

Leadership:

Dame Sandra Prunella Mason is the current president of Barbados.

Mia Amor Motley is the current Prime Minister of Barbados.

Part of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM): Barbados is part of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), formed in 1973.

 

History of Barbados

 

Barbados first became a British colony in 1625. It has been a part of the British Empire for over 400 years, with activities such as trade, commerce and exploitation promoted for centuries by British commercialism and colonialism.


Caribbean history was home to some of the most institutional and invisible horrors (slavery, forced labor, lack of democracy).

 

India-Barbados Relationship

 

Common Forum: India and Barbados have close and cordial relations and are actively involved in negotiations at the United Nations (UN), the Commonwealth and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and other international fora.

Barbados is also a signatory to the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and ratified it in January 2021.

Air Services Agreement: In 2015, India and Barbados signed an air service agreement to continue operating direct air links and chartered flights between the two countries.

 

The first Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between India and Barbados was held in 2015 in Bridgetown, Barbados.

UNSC Reforms: In 2007, Barbados endorsed the G-4 resolution on the expansion of the United Nations Security Council.

Barbados voted in favor of India's candidacy for a temporary seat on the UN Security Council in 2011-12 and endorsed India's candidacy for a permanent seat on the Security Council.

 

Bilateral Trade

 

Exports (US $ 12.76 million, year 2019-20): Indian exports include vehicles, pharmaceutical ticks, textiles, iron and steel, organic chemicals, etc.

Imports (US $ 1.48 million, year 2019-20): Indian imports include electrical machinery, optical photography, cinematographic equipment.

 

Sports and Culture

 

Due to the strong ties between the two countries through cricket, many former and current Barbadian cricketers are very popular among Indian sports fans.

Many Barbadian cricketers are members of Indian Premier League teams.

 

Indian Community

 

About 2500 people of Indian descent live in Barbados and most of them have acquired nationality there.

 

Commonwealth

 

It is an international intergovernmental organization of countries that were largely the British Empire and its territories.

It was founded in 1949 by the London Declaration.

Queen Elizabeth II is the head of the Commonwealth.

It currently has 54 member countries. This membership is based on free and equal voluntary cooperation.

 

It is home to 2.5 billion people, including advanced economies and developing countries.

The last country to join the Commonwealth was Rwanda in 2009.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is called the biennial summit of the Commonwealth Heads of Government.
